Overview

Siona Lodge, Low-Impact Travel in Primary Forest

Siona Lodge stands in one of the last unspoiled stretches of native jungle in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve — 603,380 hectares protected by Ecuador since 26 July 1979. The lodge was built deliberately around low-impact eco-tourism: small guest numbers, minimal footprint, and the conviction that these forests are best protected by the people who have seen them.

Primary forest, not regrowth

The distinction matters more than it sounds. Primary forest has never been cleared. The canopy is taller, the understorey more open, and the wildlife markedly more diverse than in the secondary growth surrounding more accessible lodges. Trails from Siona lead directly into forest that has stood uninterrupted for centuries — where the ceiba trees are genuinely ancient and the birdlife reflects an intact ecosystem.

Working with the Siona people

The lodge takes its name from the Siona, one of the indigenous nations of this territory. Community visits here are not staged performances: you spend time with a family, see cassava bread made the way it has been for generations, and meet a shaman who still practises. The revenue stays in the community, which is what makes conservation hold over time.

Programmes

Four and five-day programmes with bilingual naturalist guides. The longer stay is worth considering — Siona's value lies in unhurried time, in sitting quietly on the water at dawn rather than moving between scheduled activities.

Siona Lodge lies deep in the primary forest of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, well beyond the busier entry zones where most day traffic concentrates.

It was conceived around a specific idea: that tourism should leave the forest as it found it. Guest numbers stay deliberately low, construction used local materials and traditional methods, and the operation runs in partnership with the Siona community whose territory this is. Guests who care where their money goes tend to notice the difference.

The reserve was protected in 1979, and the forest around the lodge has never been logged. For wildlife that translates into real terms — more species, larger trees, and the layered soundscape of an intact rainforest rather than the thinner chorus of regrowth. Anyone whose priority is seeing the Amazon as it was, not as it has been rebuilt, should start here.
