CUYABENO WILDLIFE RESERVE · ECUADORIAN AMAZON

The road ends.
The Amazon begins.

Black-water rivers. Flooded forest. Pink river dolphins. Monkeys overhead. And a canoe carrying you farther from ordinary with every bend.

THIS IS CUYABENO

The Amazon
moves differently here.

Cuyabeno isn't a place you drive through. You enter it by water.

In Ecuador's northern Amazon, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is a landscape of tropical rainforest, rivers, lagoons and seasonally flooded forest.

Once you leave the bridge, the canoe becomes your transport, your wildlife hide and sometimes the best seat in the house. Monkeys move through the trees. Birds cross the river. Dolphins may surface beside the canoe. After dark, the soundtrack changes completely.

Then there is Laguna Grande: open water surrounded by forest, where afternoons can end with wildlife searching, swimming and an Amazon sunset before the nocturnal world takes over.

LAGUNA GRANDE

Eventually everyone stops talking. The lagoon usually takes care of that.

DON'T COLLECT THE AMAZON

Give it enough time
to surprise you.

Wildlife doesn't work from an itinerary. Some mornings the monkeys appear before breakfast. Some evenings a dolphin surfaces exactly where you hoped it would. Sometimes the forest makes you wait.

That's not a flaw in the experience.
That's the experience.

WHY THESE TWO LODGES?

Because we're not
just reselling them.

CarpeDM has an investment in both Pirañha and Caimán. We think that's worth telling you.

Pirañha has history here. Years ago the property operated as Samona Lodge. When ownership changed, we saw an opportunity to invest in its next chapter and help give the lodge some continuity rather than simply watching another piece of Cuyabeno change hands again.

Caimán offered something different: a strong position close to Laguna Grande, year-round canoe access and an observation tower that gives travellers another perspective on the forest.

Investing changes our relationship with these places. We know what we're selling. We care what happens after you arrive. And when something can be improved, we're not simply sending an email to a supplier. We have a reason to help make it better.

Does that mean they're the only lodges we'll sell? No. It means they're the two we're most personally invested in supporting.
TWO WAYS INTO CUYABENO

Same rainforest.
Different rhythm.

There isn't one universally “best” lodge. There is a lodge that better fits the way you want to experience Cuyabeno.

NOT OUR TWO?

Cuyabeno has
other doors.

Pirañha and Caimán are our preferred choices. They don't have to be yours.

There are other lodge options in Cuyabeno, including Bamboo Lodge, Siona Lodge, Nicky Lodge, Dolphin Lodge and Tucán Lodge.

If you've already researched Cuyabeno and one of those properties feels right for you, tell us. We can look at those options too rather than trying to squeeze every traveller into the same lodge.

We lead with Pirañha and Caimán because we know them, support them and have invested in their future. But the objective isn't to win an argument about lodges.

It's to get you into Cuyabeno the right way.

TRAVEL APPROACH
△

Traditional

Canoe journeys, rainforest trails, wildlife searching, Laguna Grande and nights surrounded by Amazon sounds.

◒

Responsible

Local guides, community experiences on longer programs and more time understanding the forest and the people whose lives are connected to it.

≈

Slow Flow

Stop treating wildlife like a checklist. Paddle quietly. Stay for sunset. Wake for the birds. Give the Amazon enough time to stop performing and simply be itself.
